    How to play

White moves first. Select one of your pieces, then a marked square. Select another of your pieces to change your choice, or an empty unmarked square to clear it.

Pawns move forward and capture diagonally. Rooks move straight, bishops diagonally, queens both ways. Knights jump in an L. Kings move one square.

Check: your king is attacked. Escape the attack. Checkmate ends the game when no escape remains. Stalemate means no legal move without check, and is a draw.

Castling: an unmoved king and rook may move together when the path is clear. The king cannot castle out of, through or into check.

En passant: immediately after a pawn advances two squares beside your pawn, you may capture it as though it moved one.

Promotion: a pawn reaching the far edge becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight. The picker starts on queen.

A repeated position three times, 50 moves by each side without a pawn move or capture, or insufficient mating material also ends this game in a draw.

Keyboard: Tab between controls; arrow keys move between board squares. Enter or Space selects and moves. Undo takes back the last move. Flip board changes your view.

Clocks: 3 + 2 starts each player on three minutes and adds two seconds per move. Other choices are 5 + 0, 10 + 0, 15 + 10 or no clock. Under ten seconds the clock turns red and shows tenths. Running out loses unless the opponent has insufficient mating material. Pause stops both clocks in local games. Undo against a bot takes back your move and its reply.

Online: create a room and share its four-letter code, or join an open table. The host starts with two seated players; others watch. Your colour sits nearest you. Use Offer draw, Accept or Decline; Resign asks for confirmation. A rematch needs both players and swaps colours. A disconnected seat is kept for 60 seconds while clocks keep running. Online games cannot be paused.
